My Love Will Not Let You Down
Recently I started to re-listen to my Bruce Springsteen collection and fell in love again with this song called "My Love Will Not Let You Down", written by Springsteen in 1982.
For some reason, the title of the song really caught my attention this time. As I listened to the lyrics, the more I felt the song was a conversation between God and the lost character in the song.
The first stanza reveals a God who is longing and searching for the lost and there's urgency in the search.
"I keep searching for you, darling.
Searching everywhere I go.
And when I find you there's gonna be.
Just one thing that you gotta know.
One thing you gotta know now
My love will not let you down
My love will not let you down"
Then, the second stanza is the response by the lost character who is searching, but searching in all the wrong places.
"At night I walk the streets looking for romance
But I always end up stumbling in a half-trance
I search for connection in some new eyes
But they're hard for protection from too many dreams passed by"
And then God responds:
"I see you standing across the room watching me without a sound
Well I'm gonna push my way through that crowd
I'm gonna tear all your walls down
Tear all your walls down
My love will not let you down
My love will not let you down"
Okay, I know it's a stretch! :-)
But the overarching theme of the song about the unbreakable, relentless love that is unstoppable until the lost lover is found is also so true about our God-- a God who does not sleep. A God who searches for us when we stray away to find love, security, meaning in other things. But God will tear through those walls and take hold of us and remind us that "my love will not let you down!".
This song is now on my rotation list as I get my radiation treatment.
4 Comments:
May the LORD answer you when you are in distress;
may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.
May he send you help from the sanctuary and grant you support from Zion.
May he remember all your sacrifices and accept your burnt offerings.
May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.
May we shout for joy over your victory and lift up our banners in the name of our God.
May the LORD grant all your requests.
Now this I know:
The LORD gives victory to his anointed. He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary with the victorious power of his right hand.
Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.
They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm.
LORD, give victory to the king!
Answer us when we call!
- Psalm 20 [NIV]
Love the entire live in NYC cd.
Wonder whether "If I should fall behind" is also on your rotation.
Oh, perhaps also "Jas in her summer clothes"?
Haven't received your usual email update on Monday, and then just remembered that you have also a blog, hehehehe, forgot about it.
Love the song and love your ability to see God in any circumstance. Gotta learn that =) Hope you can rest more this week and also hope you don't get any other secondary effects beyond what you experienced already... praying for that!
You kind of wonder what was Bruce thinking!?!
I like 'Jesus Loves Me'. My kids love it too and they dance holding hands round and round as they sing it together. It's simple and basic. Some obvious parallels so perhaps it's the inspiration for Bruce's own lyrics too. Please put this in your rotation (I have a copy I can email you).

Jesus Loves Me -- you know it was President JF Kennedy's favourite. They sung it everyday when they were shipwrecked after an incredible event. Hunted by the enemy and starving -- his cross was no less than yours today Ivan. The single crisis which 'made' him.
I hope you come of out this as JFK had -- less requisition, and more deliverance. It's not about you nor I -- it's about being men for others.
You know it would be my second childhood except I have not left the first one yet!
